Rising 4,810 metres above sea level, Mont Blanc (French for ‘White Mountain’) is the highest mountain in the Alps, and is a major European tourism destination. The Mont Blanc massif stretches across France (Haute-Savoie and Savoie), Italy (Aosta Valley) and Switzerland (western Valais). A road tunnel through the mountain, linking Chamonix in France to Courmayeur in Italy was completed in 1965. Ownership of the summit has always been contentious, but an agreement reached between Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy in 1860 places it contiguously on the French-Italian border.

Majestic and sometimes perilous, Mont Blanc is a mecca for hikers and mountaineers the world over. Some describe it as the ‘birthplace of mountaineering’, and its cultural significance is undeniable. For these and other reasons, Mont Blanc has been nominated for World Heritage status.
